COLORS AND TEXTURES AT PLATEADA, LA PLATA’S ARGENTINE ART FAIR

Running through August 30, the fair brings together thirty-nine galleries and art projects, alongside an editorial island featuring eleven publishing projects. Arte al Día highlights some of the artistic proposals in a vibrant edition, with colors, textures, and eclectic displays that remain faithful to the identity of the fair from La Plata.

Galería Crystal

Color fundamentalists, Galería Crystal presents experimental works by artists El Murre, Ezequiel Chiodi, Pol Oviedo, Rocío Levantesi, and Sebastián Rosas. “Our proposal stems from the idea of creating a kind of boutique or store with curated objects, and of bringing together disciplines such as fashion and jewelry, as well as artifice or the representation of things that appear to be one thing but are actually another,” explains Ezequiel Chiodi, artist and co-director of the gallery.

Galería La Portland

The result of a collaboration between two galleries—La Portland in Entre Ríos and Dot Fiftyone in Miami, which share the same director—the fair presents work by artists Herán Cédola and Lázaro Olier. “We found a connection between their works in their approach to the body, which is neither figurative nor photographic, but instead emerges from the play and deformation of light, shadows, and forms,” explains Agustina Nazarena Flores, the gallery’s coordinator, in conversation with Arte al Día.

Galería Acéfala

Ornamentos de compañía (Companion Ornaments) brings together works by Luana Cabra, Mijail de Amieva, Regina Irgazabal, Matías Quintana, and Julia Varela around a celebration; a toast with wine and glasses, tablecloths, and sculptures. The Buenos Aires gallery brings a sense of freshness to the fair in La Plata with a proposal shaped by color and ritual.

Estudio Fortuna – A Shared Space for Artists

Among the more emerging proposals is Estudio Fortuna, a studio of artists who work and share a common space. They are exhibiting at Plateada for the first time as a collective, with works by Lucila Ortega and Mariel Uncal Scotti. “The idea was to share our production at the different fairs and gatherings we take part in, rotating among the six artists and presenting ourselves in pairs,” explains Mariel Uncal Scotti. “We like to think that, beyond being a fair with its market, Plateada is also a space for making visible the artistic map of La Plata and the province [of Buenos Aires, Argentina], and we wanted to be present as an artists’ studio,” she adds.

Fruta Madura, Nueva Fortuna

“We wanted to be insects bringing their objects,” says artist Guillermina Bloom. This is another artist-led project—that includes her and Fantasy Dinasty, Tequiana, Mia Miguita Superstar, and Nikiri—this time from the city of Buenos Aires, whose work and practice share a common search for objects in bazaars, fairs, and what they find in the street. In an attempt to bring everything together, they created Fruta Madura, Nueva Fortuna as a bright, dreamlike fable: “The table learned to put on makeup by itself, the lamps were always changing places, the flowerpot was very studious -it wanted to become independent and have a steady job- and the papier-mâché stones fantasized a lot about traveling or going out to dinner,” narrates the curatorial text.

The Plateada fair is an initiative of the Museo Provincial de Bellas Artes Emilio Pettoruti, under the Instituto Cultural de la Provincia de Buenos Aires. It will take place on August 28, 29, and 30 at the Centro Provincial de las Artes – Teatro Argentino. Admission is free.
