BIENALSUR 2021, the third edition of the International Biennial of Contemporary Art of the South, opens in Cuenca, Ecuador, the exhibition Juliana Vidal. The Silence of Forms in the Municipal Museum of Modern Art. Vidal (Cuenca, Ecuador, 1993) has been developing a subtle poetics of the imprint - intimately linked to time and memory - using alginate, a chemical substance sensitive to the impression of physical signals. The renowned writer and curator Cristóbal Zapata, who directed the Cuenca Art Biennial, joins BIENALSUR to curate this necessary and intelligent exhibition.

The first major exhibition on Cuban artist Mariano Rodríguez (1912–90) in the United States, this retrospective features over 140 oil paintings, watercolors, and drawings from leading museum and private collections, including the artist's estate, which has provided unprecedented access to rarely seen works and archives.

The Museum of Art of Lima - MALI presents this exhibition of the outstanding Peruvian artist curated by the historian and art critic Luis Eduardo Wuffarden. Based on the so-called mixed race paintings commissioned by Viceroy Manuel de Amat y Junyent and sent to the King of Spain Carlos III in 1770, Sandra Gamarra commissioned their reproduction to a copyists' workshop in China. On these she added quotes from different contemporary feminist thinkers. In response to the absence of original works in Peru, this series, made up of twenty paintings, has been donated by LiMac to the MALI collection of contemporary art.

It’ll be the third time that BIENALSUR comes to the Brazilian embassy in Buenos Aires, in the imposing Pereda Palace. Starting September 8th, Paula Parisot, the Rio-born artist, will be presenting her exhibition Literatura del yo (“Literature of the self”), curated by Argentinian María José Herrera.

BIENALSUR 2021 arrives at the Francis Naranjo Foundation, in the Canary Islands, Spain with A New Order. Breaking Down Borders, an exhibition curated by Diana Wechsler, artistic director of the contemporary art biennial that celebrates its third edition in more than 23 countries, 50 cities and 124 venues in five continents. The exhibition, which can be seen until the end of September, is part of the curatorial axes Política del arte / Constelaciones fluididas (Art Politics / Fluid Constellations), in line with the exhibition Al Sur del Sur, which is on display in Malaga and Juntos Aparte, at the National Museum of Colombia in Bogota.

The Museum will be the first institution in the Argentine capital to inaugurate an exhibition within BIENALSUR 2021 on August 27. The artists Luciana Lamothe (Argentina), Gabriel Baggio (Argentina), Emil Finnerud (Norway) and Mehryl Levisse (France) exhibit under the curatorship of Leandro Martínez Depietri. The exhibition, on the curatorial axis Politics of art, will be open until October 24.

This is the first solo exhibition held in a Brazilian museum dedicated to the work of Erika Verzutti (São Paulo, 1971). Verzutti’s work is essential to an understanding of sculpture as it is practiced today, in Brazil and internationally. The Board of Trustees of the International Center of Photography (ICP) in New York announced today the selection of David E. Little as its new executive director, following an international search. Little will join ICP in mid-September 2021, after six years as director and chief curator of the Mead Art Museum at Amherst College, and will succeed Mark Lubell, who announced his decision to depart ICP in March 2021.

The third edition of the Bienal Internacional de Arte Contemporáneo del Sur (BIENALSUR) organized by the National University of Tres de Febrero (UNTREF), an Argentine public university, will take place until December 2021 in more than 120 venues in 50 cities in 23 countries and the Vatican, with the participation of around 400 artists of various nationalities and different backgrounds.

The European Kunsthalle has invited the artist Dora García to bring the durational performance The Messenger to Vienna. A performer (The Messenger) receives an audio message that she/he has to memorize. The only information the messenger is given is that the message is composed in a language spoken by one of the many linguistic communities calling Vienna their home. She/he is neither able to understand the message nor capable of identifying the language. The messenger’s task is to find a person who speaks the language and deciphers the message’s meaning.

Power Station of Art (Shanghai) and the Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain (Paris) present the exhibition Trees. With more than 200 artworks from over 30 artists from China, Latin America, India, Iran and Europe, the exhibition celebrates trees and their influence on contemporary art.

The Institut Valencià d'Art Modern (IVAM) exhibits works by the British artist of Palestinian origin after she was awarded the Julio González Prize 2020 by the Generalitat Valenciana. The Museum of Modern Art Bogota presents I dreamt the landscape was looking at me, by Jessica Mitrani in in collaboration with Alex Czetwertynski. It is optical device that invites the viewer on a hypnotic journey suspended between reality and fiction, personal and public, resulting in a spontaneous and non-linear narrative.

Known for their fantastical and improvisational approach to puppetry, Poncilí Creación is an art collective composed of identical twin brothers Pablo and Efrain Del Hierro who describe their practice as “speculative alchemy.” For their newly commissioned performance Somxs Podemx, the group takes to the streets for a durational progression across the neighborhoods of San Juan, the duo’s hometown and where they have been in quarantine during the global pandemic.
