The Residency at Casa Gràcia is a new residency program for visual artists and writers located in the historic city of Mahon, the capital of the island of Menorca. Founded and developed by Rashid Johnson and Sheree Hovsepian, the program operates with the support of the local team at Hauser & Wirth Menorca, a cultural center with active exhibition and learning programs.

Each year the program offers five residencies: three visual artists are invited for stays of up to three months, and two writers for stays of up to six months. Artists have access to a newly renovated studio with soaring ceilings and abundant natural light. Writers enjoy a private floor of the residence that includes a bedroom and study. Some residents also qualify for a modest stipend.

The residency takes place at Casa Gràcia, a private home built in 1860 and meticulously restored in 2025 by the architecture and design studio Laplace. The property—formerly the entrance to a nightclub with an owners' apartment above—now features four en-suite bedrooms, a living room, dining room, kitchen, and a large outdoor terrace connected to the studio via a spiral staircase. The interiors combine traditional Menorcan furniture with selected contemporary pieces.

Residencies are self-directed, with no obligation to produce an outcome or public presentation. The program encourages creative development, deep reflection, and meaningful engagement with the local community. All participants are asked to share a commitment to sustainable practices, including reducing air travel, minimizing waste, and respecting the island's natural environment and biodiversity.

Applications for the 2027 season are open through July 31, 2026. The program welcomes applications from international artists, artists based in Spain or the Balearic Islands, and writers working in all genres—including fiction, non-fiction, art history, film and television, critical theory, and poetry. The residency is overseen by an advisory board that includes Katherine Brinson, Colson Whitehead, Patrick Radden Keefe, Hank Willis Thomas, and Iwan and Manuela Wirth, among others.
