Medialab Matadero has opened the call for the fifth edition of its annual Situated Research Residency program 2027. Through this open call, the space will select three research and creation projects exploring the relationships between contemporary art, design, science, technology, and society, with a critical, experimental approach open to collaboration.

Proposals must sit at the margins or intersections of disciplines, methodologies, and knowledges, and connect explicitly with one or more of the thematic areas developed in Medialab's recent programs: LAB 1 Sentient Media, LAB 2 The Metabolic Sublime, LAB 3 Synthetic Minds, LAB 4 Weird Futures, and LAB 5 The Mechanics of Truth.

The residency runs from January to July 2027, in person in Madrid, with long stays recommended between March and June. It includes access to Medialab's material infrastructure — Fablab, technical materials, and an individual workspace — and a stipend of €10,000 (before tax). A finished project is not required as an outcome: the program prioritizes the production of public knowledge, which may take the form of manuals, documentaries, essays, or audiovisual records of collective learning. Selected projects must schedule public activities — seminars, workshops, conversations — with logistical and conceptual support from the Medialab team.

The call is open to individuals or collectives researching in design, art, architecture, urbanism, economics, film, photography, journalism, digital media, environmental science, philosophy, engineering, social studies, political science, programming, materials science, activism, or any other field consistent with the stated goals. Applications may be submitted in Spanish or English.

The application deadline is September 27, 2026.
