ARCHITECTURE AND SPIRITUALITY IN ENGEL LEONARDO
In his latest exhibition in Madrid, the Dominican artist further develops his exploration of geometric abstraction from a Caribbean perspective, linking architecture, memory, and spirituality to examine the connections between history and Antillean identity.
The Madrid-based gallery Formato Cómodo presents La Vereda, a solo exhibition by Engel Leonardo (Baní, Dominican Republic, 1977), which reaffirms the artist’s ongoing investigation into geometric abstraction from an Antillean and Caribbean perspective. Drawing upon research into material and spiritual culture, as well as Indigenous and Afro-Caribbean memory, Leonardo creates compositions that foreground the conceptual significance of the diverse cultural dimensions that shape the Antillean archipelago.
In this body of work, the Dominican artist emphasizes the use of bars as the structural element underpinning his visual language, while further advancing his abstract vocabulary through architectural references that organize and define each composition. These architectural systems are interwoven with Caribbean modes of spiritual thought and expression, giving rise to a space in which material and immaterial dimensions become inseparable.
The portals and thresholds that recur throughout the works function as connectors between distinct narratives, histories, territories, and realities, emerging from a dynamic network of encounters and interactions. This approach is closely aligned with Leonardo’s longstanding interest in examining the relationships between history, architecture, and culture in the Caribbean. The result is a compelling proposal that brings together constructive systems and spiritual expressions, offering a nuanced reflection on the cultural and historical complexities of the region.
Engel Leonardo: La Vereda is on view through 20 August 2026 at Galería Formato Cómodo, Lope de Vega 5, Madrid, Spain.
