SANDRA RAMOS IMAGINES NEW ITHACAS IN LAS PALMAS
The CAAM presents an exhibition dedicated to Sandra Ramos that positions art as a tool for imagining possible futures in the face of an unstable world. Through her work, the artist addresses themes such as identity, migration, and displacement from a critical and poetic perspective.
Soñando otra Ítaca is an exhibition project presented by the Centro Atlántico de Arte Moderno (CAAM) in Gran Canaria, showcasing the work of Sandra Ramos. The show focuses on her interest in exploring art as a means to envision alternative and possible places in response to a world perceived by the artist as unstable. Through her practice, Ramos engages with contemporary reality through a critical and poetic lens, in a trajectory that spans from her early printmaking in the 1990s to her most recent installations and audiovisual works.
Curated by Wendy Navarro, the exhibition draws on the figure of the “pioneer girl,” the artist’s alter ego and a symbol of the generations born in Cuba after the Revolution, who acts as a guide throughout the journey. This character blends innocence and tenderness with irony and social critique, leading the viewer through a universe where literary, mythological, and philosophical references intersect with the artist’s personal experiences.
Ramos’s work, developed through a strong multidisciplinary approach, employs a variety of media and techniques to create immersive experiences that encourage viewers to reflect on key contemporary issues such as migration, displacement, identity, the loss of utopian ideals, and the power dynamics shaping today’s society.
In this context, her approach integrates the intimate and the collective, generating a confrontation with the tensions of the contemporary world. The classical notion of Ithaca—understood as homeland, destination, or ideal—acquires a particularly symbolic significance, allowing the artist to imagine the creation of new horizons in which art becomes a space of human connection, freedom, and transformation.
Sandra Ramos. Soñando otra Ítaca can be visited until 18 October 2026 at the Centro Atlántico de Arte Moderno (CAAM), Los Balcones 11–13, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Spain.
