Notes related to Textil

Queer Threads is a traveling group exhibition and coffee-table book exploring contemporary lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer experiences through fiber and textile traditions. It arrived at San José Museum Quilts & Textiles from may 12^th to August 20^th, 2023.

In its tenth edition, Pinta PArC, Peru Contemporary Art presented the Amazonía section, which exhibits renowned artists from native communities and is curated by Gredna Landolt.

Ser Pallay is a textile project that revolves around the creation of kunan pallaykuna (contemporary Andean textile iconography) and is the result of a collaboration between textile artists María José Murillo and Verovcha.

Centurión’s textiles reflect his upbringing in a matriarchal Paraguayan household, and his experiences as a queer artist in Buenos Aires, Argentina, where he lived for most of his life. He often incorporated historically feminized crafts such as knitting, crocheting, and embroidering.

The exhibition Madalena Santos Reinbolt: una cabeza llena de planetas (A head full of planets) is the first solo exhibition of the Brazilian artist at the Museu de Arte de São Paulo.

The exhibition Teresa Lanceta: Weaving as Open Source traces the artist's trajectory from the 1970s through to the present day and includes a broad selection of tapestries, weavings, fabrics, drawings, photographs and videos, offering the most comprehensive overview of her work to date. The exhibition traces a narrative through various series of projects with the aim of identifying Lanceta's voice, and presents works that poetically question concepts formerly considered antagonistic. 

As a novelty, this year Pinta PArC presents a new space with a leading role marked by the textile art of Tiodoro Pacco. Institutionally and with the curatorship of Jerson Ramirez, the aim is to recover, highlight and celebrate the traditional techniques and artistic work of the region. The space is thus dedicated to the exploration of memory, the transmission of cultural values​​and the examination of the processes and formats that are interwoven in the Peruvian artistic identity.

Following its highly acclaimed debut at the 2019 Biennale, Ghana will present the exhibition Black Star—The Museum as Freedom for the Ghana Pavilion at the 59^th International Art Exhibition—la Biennale di Venezia in 2022. With the patronage of Ghana’s President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and curatorship by Nana Oforiatta Ayim, the featured artists are Na Chainkua Reindorf, Afroscope and Diego Araúja.

As travelers walk near Miami International Airport's gate D29, Miami-based painter Yolanda Sánchez invites them to also walk through an imaginary garden of Korean-inspired, translucent fiber constructions in luscious, vibrant colors with The Earth Laughs in Flowers, the latest exhibition at MIA's “The Eye Has to Travel” Gallery.

Goldwasser (Montevideo, 1961) will be representing Uruguay in the 59th Venice Biennale 2022 with his project Persona. Curated by Laura Malosetti Costa and Pablo Uribe, Persona disputes uniformity and disputes the idea itself of persona. Goldwasser's project was chosen by the National Visual Arts Commission in an open competition declared by the Uruguayan Ministry of Education and Culture. The Uruguay pavilion occupies a privileged spot in the Gardens of the Biennale, flanked by those of France and the United States.

The thread is the element that stars in this exhibition, increasingly relevant in contemporary art. It is silent because of its "designation" as a material for women, reflected in techniques such as weaving, embroidery and sewing. The exhibition highlights these traditional activities and shows how artists from Nigeria, Argentina, Cuba, the United States and Colombia coincide in the use of thread and collage in their works. The exhibition is curated by Los Angeles-based design specialist Liliana Becerra and the MAP team (Ana Lucía Arbeláez, art historian, and Sandra Montenegro, director).

Olga de Amaral has pioneered her own visual language within the fiber arts movement. Her radical experimentation with color, form, material, composition, and space transforms weaving from a flat design element into an architectural component that defies the confines of any genre or medium.

The Sala de Arte Joven presents the exhibition “Nudo Nido” (Knot Nest), one of the winning projects of the XII edition of the Curator Wanted open call, which seeks new curatorial formats, facilitating access to the professional world of young curators.
