Open

The Eskenazi School of Art, Architecture + Design at Indiana University Bloomington announces the open call for the 2028 McKinney International Art and Design Residency, aimed at established artists and designers whose primary country of residence is outside the United States. The program seeks professionals actively engaged in a contemporary artistic practice, with a record of national and international exhibitions. Applications are welcome from both studio-based practitioners and those working in the field of criticism.

Applications must be submitted via SLIDEROOM by January 18, 2026. Selected artists will undertake a four- to six-week residency between February 1 and April 1, 2028, during which they are required to remain in residence for the full period.

Selection will be based on the merits of the applicant’s professional career, their interest in engaging with an academic environment, and the proposal submitted to develop and expand their creative process through the use of Indiana University’s facilities, collections, and research centers. Residents will be featured in the McKinney Visiting Artist Lecture Series and will coordinate with the Eskenazi School public-facing activities such as studio visits, open studios, and a workshop focused on technical and/or conceptual innovations.

The program provides studio space, accommodation, and an USD 8,000 fellowship, disbursed in two installments: one prior to arrival to assist with travel expenses to and from Indianapolis Airport, and the remaining balance upon completion of the residency. In addition, the institution will provide health insurance for the duration of the residency and cover up to USD 500 in materials. Any additional production expenses will be the responsibility of the selected artist.

Indiana University Bloomington, the flagship campus of the IU system, is widely recognized for its commitment to innovation, creativity, and academic freedom. With more than 48,000 students and located 50 miles southwest of Indianapolis, it stands out as a major cultural and artistic hub in the Midwest, combining the vitality of a large city with the pace of a close-knit community.

Within this context, Studio Art, founded in 1895, offers undergraduate and graduate programs in fourteen concentrations, including ceramics, painting, graphic design, jewelry, digital art and time-based media, photography, fibers, printmaking, and sculpture.
