VELVET CLUB: A CLICHÉD DREAM AT THE MODERNO
Daniel Basso presents new works that reinterpret nocturnal aesthetics, consumer objects, and urban memories to create an immersive space between fantasy and exaggeration.
This Thursday, the Museo de Arte Moderno de Buenos Aires inaugurated the exhibition Daniel Basso: Terciopelo Club (Velvet Club), a project that invites viewers to reflect on the experience of space and the construction of intimacy through contemporary art.
This is the first solo museum exhibition in Argentina by Daniel Basso (Mar del Plata, 1974). The series features new works produced especially for the occasion, expressing the marplatense artist’s recurring interests: the bittersweet memory of the Atlantic coast, the night and its hollow joy, and the everyday beauty of commercial design.

With objects of great visual allure—somewhere between sculpture, architecture, and pure ornament—Basso constructs simulacra that are as inhabitable as they are artificial, animated by a strong sense of play. Shifts in scale, optical tricks, and contrasts in textures and colors turn these environments into a game of appearances rooted entirely in fiction.
Through an original reading of the cultural atmosphere of the 1990s, the décor of nightclubs, the clichés of mass tourism, and the exaltation of surfaces push the eccentricity of form to its limits, immersing visitors in an evanescent stage of pure illusion.

In the words of Franco Chimento, the exhibition’s curator: “With his characteristic mastery of space and composition, Basso immerses us in a fictional environment that both surprises and evokes fragments of our daily lives. Through his gaze, he reinterprets and revalues the ways in which we experience the landscapes of our cities, seaside vacations, and summer nights.”
Daniel Basso: Terciopelo Club is on view through March 2026 at the Museo Moderno de Buenos Aires, Avenida San Juan 350, San Telmo (Argentina).
