SPACE AND REPETITION IN FAUSTO AMUNDARAIN, AT BIBI + REUS
By Álvaro de Benito
The Bibi + Reus gallery presents I Have Been to the Mountain, an exhibition dedicated to the recent work of Fausto Amundarain (Caracas, Venezuela, 1992), in which the ongoing relationship between sculpture and painting in his practice can be observed. Without dwelling on absence, the artist seeks to highlight negative space as an essential environment for the emergence of all that is possible.
Three fundamental influences converge in his pictorial practice: collage, comics, and repetition. These elements lead his artistic language to flirt with a certain pop expressiveness, as well as with accumulation and repetition as complementary concepts—approaches he also explores in his sculptural work.
Questions of origin and belonging are intertwined with the myth of the hero in his paintings. This reference emerges and is embodied in figures of heroism immersed in unfamiliar environments, which reflect the challenges of survival in the unknown.

In this exhibition, Amundarain uses seeds in his sculptural work as a metaphor for an evolutionary, organic entity—constantly growing, if intended for that purpose. In his Bird Feeder series, the Venezuelan artist begins with the mechanical reproduction of the image of the almond. The nut itself is a sculptural object, in both shape and volume, and represents both container and content.
From this idea emerges the series, in which hundreds of mechanically and systematically reproduced almonds are encapsulated in, or related to, design objects—elements reminiscent of furniture structures—which serve as repositories for the seeds. In this way, a metaphor and a loop are formed around the concept of the capsule, leading us to consider ideas of protection and the relationship with the environment.
I Have Been to the Mountain is on view until August 30 at Bibi + Reus, Molí del Comte, 47A, Palma de Mallorca (Spain).
