CARLOS MOTTA'S ANTHOLOGICAL EXHIBITION AT MACBA

By Álvaro de Benito

Barcelona’s MACBA is hosting Plegarias de resistencia (Prayers of Resistance), the first major anthological exhibition of the work of Carlos Motta (Bogotá, Colombia, 1978) to be held at a European institution. The presentation spans more than twenty-five years of the artist’s production, practice, and activism.

The body and sexuality are central themes in Motta’s work, serving as key territories for experimentation. Their importance is emphasized through a wide-ranging selection of pieces from various stages of his career. Visitors are guided from his early photographic self-portraits to the messages conveyed in his most recent performances and video installations.

Plegarias de resistencia reveals the depth of Motta’s critical inquiry, especially regarding violence, colonization, and the role of religion in shaping the foundations and methodologies of scientific knowledge. It also highlights his commitment to examining political history and sociology as key factors in the vulnerability of the body—both individual and collective.

Motta’s work constructs alternative narratives to those found in dominant historiographies, with particular focus on history and religion. Through this reinterpretation, he channels his drive to reformulate these discourses, aiming to challenge their foundational premises from a deliberately dissident stance.

Carlos Motta. Plegarias de resistencia is on view through October 26 at MACBA, Pl. dels Àngels 1, Barcelona (Spain).
