THE CINEMATIC GAZE OF ANA SEGOVIA AT C3A

By Álvaro de Benito

The Centro de Creación Contemporánea de Andalucía (C3A) in Córdoba is presenting Me duelen los ojos de mirar sin verte, the first solo exhibition in Spain by Ana Segovia (Mexico City, Mexico, 1991), on view until January. Curated by Jimena Blázquez Abascal, the show features thirteen oil paintings on canvas and one work on wood, all created expressly for the occasion.

THE CINEMATIC GAZE OF ANA SEGOVIA AT C3A

The exhibition revolves around the golden age of Spanish cinema, drawing particular inspiration from the figure of dancer and singer Lola Flores and the film Pena, penita, pena, directed by Miguel Morayta. This feature offers many of the key elements that shaped the cinematic imagination of the period. Based on that iconography and its development, the Mexican artist constructs a space in which absence becomes essential—a driving force that structures the viewer’s gaze.

Despite this point of departure, Lola Flores never appears in the series. Instead, the leading role is taken by figures seen from behind, seemingly responding to her invisible presence as they gaze toward a space where she is presumed to be. In this way, Segovia’s painting opens up to the exhibition space through scenographic techniques and languages that transport viewers to the planes and technologies of classic cinema.

The works vary in scale, yet their titles share a nominative thread that anchors their connection to cinematic style, reinforcing the relationship between visual narrative and the reconstruction of a scene. The chromatic use of ochre, acidic pink, and yellow intertwine to suggest a certain baroqueness that strikes the viewer, playing with the presences and absences that permeate the exhibition’s concept.
