MIGUEL ROTHSCHILD NOMINATED FOR THE EFG LATIN AMERICA ART AWARD
The Berlin-based Argentine artist was selected at Pinta BAphoto with a micro-perforated photograph.
The EFG Latin America Art Award, in partnership with ArtNexus, has announced Miguel Rothschild of Buenos Aires, Argentina, represented by Jorge López Galería of Valencia, Spain, as the nominated artist for its annual acquisition prize. The work was selected at the Pinta BAphoto fair in collaboration with Eva Grinstein, curator and art critic, together with Celia Sredni de Birbragher, director and editor of ArtNexus.
Miguel Rothschild (b. Buenos Aires, Argentina, 1963) is a conceptual artist who has been based in Berlin since the early 1990s. Rothschild approaches genres and materials with freedom, intelligence and a refined sense of humor. For the selected work, titled Lluvia y tormento: El Diluvio I (2011), the artist presents an imposing stormy landscape pierced by micro-perforations that cut through the photographic paper and leave their confetti “residue” at the base of the frame.
“The openwork pattern unfolds as a kind of drawing that accentuates the shape of the clouds and creates the illusion of a curtain of water, a procedure that, paradoxically, both heightens and relativizes the drama of the original shot, taken at Recoleta Cemetery in Buenos Aires,” explained Eva Grinstein.
The EFG Latin America Art Award, now in its sixteenth year, was created to support the production of Latin American artists whose work is pre-selected by a jury at contemporary art fairs across Latin America throughout the year. The award aims to promote visual arts production from the continent, and regional fairs, among collectors worldwide, with the strategic development of Liaisons. This year, preselection will take place at the following fairs: SP-Arte, São Paulo; Pinta Lima, Lima; ArtRio, Rio de Janeiro; ARTBO, Bogotá; and Pinta BAphoto, Buenos Aires.
As in previous years, once the nominees have been selected at the participating Latin American art fairs, the acquisition will be announced at Pinta Miami during Art Basel week. EFG Capital will acquire a representative artwork by the winning artist. The complete EFG Latin America Art Award collection is permanently on display at EFG Capital’s offices in Miami.
