In HIPERASIA, Chilean artist Patrick Hamilton examines post-capitalism, consumerism, and neoliberalism through the formal premises of geometric abstraction and minimalism, while reflecting on cultural banalization and contemporary global dynamics.

The Madrid-based gallery Casado Santapau presents HIPERASIA, the third solo exhibition by Patrick Hamilton (Leuven, Belgium, 1974) at the space. Continuing the most recognizable lines of his practice, the Chilean artist situates his proposal at the intersection of art, economics, and cultural critique, addressing contemporary issues such as the evolution of post-capitalism, artificial intelligence, social inequality, and environmental crisis.

Drawing from the visual language of geometric abstraction and minimalism, Hamilton employs these artistic traditions to critique the structures and effects of neoliberalism in contemporary society. The exhibition constructs a portrait based on the artist’s everyday encounters with Chinese-run bazaars across Madrid, which he transforms into a kind of museum of contemporary curiosities.

After years of exploring these commercial environments, Hamilton develops two bodies of work that articulate his response to these concerns. Abrasive Paintings consists of two-tone compositions made with sandpaper that engage in dialogue with Neo-Geo and Op Art from the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s. Equilibrios, meanwhile, is a photographic series composed of basic constructions made with tools, costume jewelry, and tourist postcards, later subjected to a handcrafted process before being photographed.

The exhibition ultimately unfolds as a set of visual essays exploring different dimensions of consumption. Strongly influenced by ethnographic and anthropological perspectives, Hamilton rethinks symbolic processes and questions temporality, aesthetics, and cultural banalization beyond the local sphere, framing them instead as global phenomena with uncertain impact.
