GLENDA LEÓN: A RITUAL SPACE IN THE SEARCH FOR MEANING
Glenda León creates a space where art, sound, and dance engage in dialogue in the face of the erosion of traditional systems of belief, through symbols that allow us to rethink the meaning of the contemporary from a ritual perspective.
Acerca de lo invisible (About the Invisible) is the title of the exhibition that Glenda León (Havana, Cuba, 1976) presents at Madrid’s Max Estrella gallery, in which she reflects on the erosion of values and traditional systems of belief. In addition to consolidating uncertainty as a vital element for understanding the contemporary, her proposal emerges with the intention of positioning art as a space conducive to rethinking alternative possibilities.
From this perspective, the Cuban-Spanish artist’s idea takes shape in the transformation of the environment—here, the exhibition space—where the gallery acquires the condition of a temple through the ritualization of creative processes in the visual, performing, and musical arts. The proposal also continues paths initiated in the research León has developed over recent decades on the relationship between existential elements and artistic languages.
The exhibition is structured around the performance-installation CONVERSIO, visible from the entrance yet intended to be the final point of the itinerary. However, this ending is not trivial, as the exhibition invites viewers to immerse themselves from different directions, even if all converge at the same point. The rhythmic pulse recalls the vital one, and sound—habitual in her practice—assumes an essential role that is amplified through dance.
The works that shape this journey function as symbols. A flag made from fragments of all the world’s flags or a jewel fused with religious emblems are conceptual processes that revolve around humanity’s search for meaning. Ultimately, the artist does not seek to impose anything, but rather to facilitate an open and connective dialogue.
Glenda León. Acerca de lo invisible can be seen until April 11, 2026, at Max Estrella, Santo Tomé, 6, Madrid (Spain).
