The Puerto Rican gallery Embajada, in collaboration with El Apartamento, presents EQUELECÚA at the latter’s Madrid space, an exhibition bringing together works by artists from its roster. The show is conceived not only as an exhibition, but also as a survey of the languages and artistic production currently taking place across the Caribbean, Latin America, and their diasporas.

Structured around the Caribbean colloquial expression “equelecuá,” which refers to the moment when a dilemma is resolved or the pieces of a problem fall into place, the exhibition introduces a plurality of narratives, themes, and techniques that explore different forms of cultural, aesthetic, and symbolic expression.

Through works by Pablo Delano, Chaveli Sifre, Radamés Juni Figueroa, Daniel Pabón Velázquez, Jean-Pierre Villafañe, Jonathan Torres, Georgina Treviño, María Lulú Varona, Nora Maité Nieves, Joshua Nazario, Edra Soto, and Kianí del Valle, the viewer encounters a succession of diverse practices and formal registers that define the artists’ approaches.

From image-based work and installation to sculpture, painting, and performative practices, the exhibition offers a wide range of sensibilities that underscore the heterogeneity of a context often perceived as singular. Ultimately, the work of these twelve artists converges in the exploration of different modes of cultural representation, as well as in the use of symbols and aesthetics that reflect the essence of the insular Caribbean.

EQUELECÚA can be visited until early May at El Apartamento’s project space (Puebla 4, Madrid, Spain).
