TIME AND SPACE IN THE SEMANTICS OF DETANICO LAIN, AT CASADO SANTAPAU
The Brazilian duo Detanico Lain explores the relationship between time and space through systems of representation that transform language into visual and physical structures charged with semiological meaning.
Casado Santapau presents Espacios de tiempo, a solo exhibition by Detanico Lain, the duo formed by Angela Detanico (Caxias do Sul, Brazil, 1974) and Rafael Lain (Caxias do Sul, Brazil, 1973). Since establishing themselves as an artistic unit in the mid-1990s, the two artists have combined elements and concepts from semiotics and linguistics with graphic design and typography, opening a field of inquiry into how we interpret and organize the world.
The intimate relationship between the temporal and the spatial forms the core of the exhibition. Time is conceived as a fragile structure, exposed to fragmentation and capable, through its own inertia, of materializing into something physical. Their processes unfold in a poetic formalism expressed through various formats, including installations, graphic works, and sound pieces. By abandoning the notion of a continuous line, this new condition allows viewers to take part in its interpretation.

In their commitment to semantic exploration, the Brazilian artists focus on analyzing and transforming the systems of representation that structure—and effectively construct—our perception. By foregrounding symbols, codes, and protocols, they question more or less conventional languages and propose new approaches to translating certain phenomena into visual and spatial structures.
Detanico Lain. Espacios de tiempo can be seen until April 11, 2026, at Casado Santapau, Piamonte 10, Madrid (Spain).
