THE CRITICAL SENSE OF GALA BERGER’S CARNIVAL AT BOMBON + CRISIS
By Álvaro de Benito
Bombon + CRISIS presents 12 Carnavales, the first solo exhibition by Gala Berger (Villa Gesell, Argentina, 1983) in its space. The show takes shape as a critical, anthropologically tinged study of festive and performative practices that take place during carnivals in various South American capitals. Drawing from digital archives and textile compositions, the artist explores the role of the image in shaping identities and collectives within community-based celebrations.
To this end, her work delves into the creation and representation of imaginary figures produced through digital printing and diverse textile techniques. These figures stand as archetypal subjects that become instrumental in analyzing the social, political, and artistic value of popular imaginaries and the paradigmatic iconographies of folk art.
Within this context, the notion of carnival space and concept takes on particular relevance as a stage for transgression—whether social, religious, or gender-related. From this perspective, Berger investigates how ephemeral relationships function in that environment, as well as their oppositional value in light of the many political restrictions and prohibitions that some celebrations have faced.

Additionally, the Argentine artist presents a series of textile elements that allude to her family memories. The lycras and other layered materials in her proposal evoke the qualities of temporality, memory, and sentimentality, and their sublimation as a form of record.
Gala Berger: 12 Carnavales can be visited until January 3 at Bombon + CRISIS, Madera 33, Madrid (Spain).
