GARAICOA’S GEOMETRICS EXPLORATION AT PELAIRES

From 07/01/2025 to 09/11/2025
Palma de Mallorca, Spain

Pelaires, in Palma de Mallorca, is currently presenting La lección de geometría (The Geometry Lesson), an exhibition by Carlos Garaicoa (Havana, Cuba, 1967) that delves into the artist’s vision of geometric abstraction. Rooted in personal perception and infused with scientific and philosophical perspectives, the works gathered at the gallery explore connections between geometry and particular historical viewpoints.

GARAICOA’S GEOMETRICS EXPLORATION AT PELAIRES

The exhibition brings together a selection of paintings and reliefs, most of which were previously shown in p=3.1416, held at Elba Benítez in Madrid—who co-produced this show—in 2024. In that earlier exhibition, Garaicoa appeared to distill the volume of his theoretical concepts into two-dimensional forms. At the intersection of form and volume, a compelling dialogue emerges between the technical, the scientific, and the organic.

There is also an investigative quality underlying Garaicoa’s approach across several pieces. Some works reflect a record or study of the evolution of abstraction and expressionism, reemerging as a deliberate departure from the rigidity of geometric structure. This blurring of boundaries becomes essential—not only to the creative process, but more importantly, to praxis as a didactic tool.

Pelaires’ presentation also includes references to photography. More than simply documenting objects, the selected snapshots serve varied purposes, including emphasizing the central role of architecture in Garaicoa’s broader body of work. In this context, sculpture—particularly in its most geometric form—takes center stage, as does the three-dimensionality of several pieces with a distinctly architectural character.

La lección de geometría is on view through September 11 at Pelaires, Can Verí 3, Palma de Mallorca, Spain.
