RECLAIMING PAZ ERRÁZURIZ'S PHOTOGRAPHY OF RESISTANCE AT MUCAC

Poetics of Resistance is the exhibition devoted to Chilean photographer Paz Errázuriz (Santiago, Chile, 1944), presented at MUCAC Málaga and co-produced with Fundación MAPFRE. Bringing together 75 photographs made from the late 1970s to the present, the exhibition surveys the career of one of Chile's most distinguished photographers. Errázuriz's practice emerged under the repressive conditions of Augusto Pinochet's military dictatorship, a context in which photographing those relegated to the social margins became, in itself, an act of resistance.

A profound sense of proximity and humanity underpins Errázuriz's engagement with communities rendered socially invisible. Her photographic series are permeated by a respectful gaze through which political critique unfolds within broader philosophical and social concerns. The exhibition in Málaga brings together several of her landmark projects —including La manzana de Adán, El infarto del alma, Los dormidos, El circo, and Protestas—in which she foregrounds the subjectivity of marginalized individuals while exposing social inequality, vulnerability, and the enduring consequences of political repression.

Grounded in relationships of trust and sustained personal engagement, Errázuriz deliberately avoids sensationalism, allowing her subjects to emerge with dignity, empathy, and agency. Her photography transcends the conventions of documentary practice, evolving into an ethical inquiry into exclusion, identity, and human rights. Through her images, she challenges official narratives while contributing to the construction of alternative forms of memory and resistance.
