Miguel Escobar has been named the inaugural recipient of the Ian Rosenfeld Fund, a £7,500 annual award established by Gallery Rosenfeld. Chosen from more than 1,300 applications worldwide, his work stood out for its conceptual clarity, psychological charge and quiet, resonant reflection on contemporary life.

Born in Colombia in 1990, Escobar has not previously exhibited in the United Kingdom. His practice moves between past and present, shaped by his training in Buenos Aires and Florence, as well as his time in Norway studying with Odd Nerdrum and his apprenticeship with David Manzur. These experiences inform a body of work that articulates a sustained engagement with pictorial construction.

His paintings stage animals as protagonists within constructed, theatrical environments—intimate and uncanny spaces that subtly mirror contemporary social structures. Through these scenes, Escobar develops a restrained yet psychologically charged visual language.

His work is held in major museum collections, including the Museo del Banco de la República and Museo de Arte de Caldas in Colombia, as well as Museo d’Arte Contemporanea MACS Sicilia in Italy and Museo MEAM in Barcelona, Spain.

Established in memory of the gallery’s founder, the Ian Rosenfeld Fund is dedicated to supporting early- to mid-career artists through direct, unrestricted financial assistance. The award requires no artwork in return, creating space for focus and long-term development. In addition, the selected artist receives ongoing mentorship and guidance, fostering sustained dialogue beyond the prize itself.

“It is a great honor to be the inaugural recipient of the Ian Rosenfeld Fund. I have long admired Gallery Rosenfeld's dedication to supporting artists and fostering meaningful dialogue around contemporary art. This recognition provides an important platform for the continued development of my practice and the exploration of new directions in my work”, Escobar said.
