YÁZPIK AT LODO GALLERY: “LIGHT AS INTERIOR SCULPTURE”
Once again, the Paris-based gallery will showcase the work of Jorge Yázpik, whose sculptural forms—defined by their exploration of interior voids and spatial tension—engage with the essence of abstraction while remaining deeply rooted in Mexican materials and traditions.
Yázpik’s sculptures are striking not only for their external shapes but also for the interior spaces where light plays a vital role. Through cuts and openings, light enters the material and transforms emptiness into volume, revealing prismatic structures with their own visual presence.
"Like nesting dolls, these sculptures contain internal worlds in motion, contrasting with the apparent stillness of their surface. Textures, forms, light, and shadow coexist in a constant play of dualities that suggest metamorphosis, reminding us that everything is mutable— and therefore alive," writes Juana Gutiérrez Haces in the curatorial text.
Jorge Yázpik (Mexico City, 1955) has spent over forty years developing a distinctive sculptural language rooted in matter, void, and light. A graduate of the Academia de San Carlos (UNAM), he works primarily in direct carving, using materials such as obsidian, jade, wood, and volcanic stone, transforming them into geometric forms infused with interior spaces and light passages.
Today, his practice intersects sculpture, architecture, and design in a process that is both intuitive and precise. His recent works incorporate subtle contrasts of textures, materials, and even gold leaf, revealing a quiet poetics of form and space. He exhibits regularly in Europe, the United States and Mexico with recent shows at Casa Gilardi, the Art Museum of the Americas in Washington D.C., and the upcoming Sculpted exhibition at Materia Studio in Mexico City.
Jorge Yázpik will be on view from July 19 to November 1, 2025, at LODO Gallery, 20 Rue de Verneuil, 75007 Paris (France).
