RUTH BENZACAR OPENS ITS DOORS TO DELIA CANCELA

The gallery welcomes a key figure in Argentine and Latin American art since the 1960s. Her practice has unfolded between Buenos Aires, New York, and Paris, spanning painting, design, performance, and fashion, with a radical approach to the body, desire, and a bold, romantic vision of the female condition.

In July 2025, Ruth Benzacar will host Delia Cancela’s first solo exhibition at the gallery. In August, during the next edition of arteBA, her work will be presented by the gallery. Her practice will also be included in a major institutional exhibition opening in 2026.

Cancela was born in Buenos Aires and studied at the Escuela Superior de Bellas Artes. Since her early days in the 1960s avant-garde, linked to the Instituto Di Tella, she introduced fashion as a language in art, eventually making it a central element of her work. From the 1970s onward, she created illustrations for the covers of British Vogue, and her work has been featured in both art and fashion publications. She dedicated herself fully to fashion and, years later, managed to reconcile it with painting. One of the key motifs in her work is the depiction of hair: spiky and elevated hairstyles, long hair that flows down to the ground—elements that continue to appear in her pieces to this day. The erotic exploration of the feminine world is another essential aspect of her practice.

A leading figure in Argentina and a pioneer in the region, she continues to participate in national and international art fairs.

Ruth Benzacar Galería de Arte represents both established and emerging artists, supporting them as they grow locally and internationally. Based in Buenos Aires and celebrating its 60th anniversary in 2025, the gallery is currently directed by Orly Benzacar and Mora Bacal, the third generation of pioneering gallerists in Argentina’s art market.
