ART AND ECOSOPHY: RODRIGO GÓMEZ SPELT AT CASA MAYOR
As part of Pinta Asunción Art Week, the exhibition takes inspiration from lichens to explore the intersections between artistic languages, cultural memory, and nature.
On September 12, Casa Mayor will open Fungarium, a solo exhibition by multidisciplinary artist Rodrigo Gómez Spelt. The show will be presented during Pinta Asunción Art Week, an event taking place from September 10 to 13 with activities across the city, including exhibitions, artist studio visits, and guided tours through renowned galleries and museums.
In this series of works, Gómez Spelt draws inspiration from the forms of lichens. Through ecosophy, he invites viewers to reflect on the relationship between human beings and nature. "In contrast to the everyday realism of things that vanish, a certain speculative imagination contributes to expanding the horizons of what is possible toward a world where the vital can inhabit blackness and draw out its harmful edges. At times, one must inhabit blackness. Perhaps in this way the non-living can be brought together with the living—transforming the non-living into the living," explains Damián Cabrera in the exhibition text.
The Paraguayan artist’s practice is grounded in ongoing research rooted in artistic exploration, where multiple languages converge. His process combines academic training and knowledge transmitted through cultural institutions with the traditions of rural and Indigenous popular art.
Rodrigo Gómez Spelt is an independent multidisciplinary artist from Paraguay. He holds a degree in Art Education and a B.A. in Visual Arts. In 2015, he was awarded first place in the “Matisse Prize,” organized by the Centro Cultural de la Alianza Francesa and the Asociación para las Artes Visuales en el Paraguay Gente de Arte. Among his solo exhibitions are ã (sombra-alma) (2018) at the Centro Cultural de la Alianza Francesa; Pyhare Pyte (2023) at Galería Fuga-Morra; and El Retorno de las Musas (2025) at the Centro Cultural de España Juan de Salazar.
