Caudal is an intimate journey that connects the Argentine Patagonia with the Canadian winter. The exhibition brings together previously unseen works that explore notions of belonging, distance, and memory through watercolors, sculptures, and a video installation.

AMADEO AZAR’S EMOTIONAL LANDSCAPES IN MIAMI

Dot Fiftyone Gallery presents Caudal, the latest solo project by Amadeo Azar, marking his second exhibition with the gallery. The show featured in the Project Room offers a glimpse into a deeply personal and contemplative body of work produced during Azar’s recent winter residency at Est-Nord-Est, an art center in Saint-Jean-Port-Joli, Quebec, Canada.

The works resonate with themes of place, memory, and emotional geography, as the artist reflects on the interwoven landscapes of his native Mar del Plata and La Pampa in Argentina, and the snow-covered vistas along the Saint-Lawrence River in Quebec.

“Amadeo Azar’s studio is filled with delicate hand-made ceramic and wood instruments that feel organic and inviting to manipulate. Bell-like forms, finished in a greenish glaze with their handles shaped by woodturning, hang on the wall from custom rests. Their modular nature suggests infinite configurations—a metaphor for Azar’s exploration of displacement and reassembly”, wrote Didier Morelli, performance artist, art historian, and cultural critic.

Azar’s watercolors, richly textured and luminous, blend multiple topographies into dreamlike compositions where light itself becomes a subject. In one poignant diptych, a maple sugar harvest on one panel is paired with the image of a hand reaching for a snowflake on the other. Joined by a bent piece of wood, the two paintings appear to hold hands, a tender homage to Roberto Aizenberg’s Padre e hijo contemplando la sombra de un día (1962), and a reflection of the artist’s longing for his young son back home in Argentina.

This exhibition invites viewers into a world of quiet introspection, tactile beauty, and the emotional resonance of landscapes both near and far.

Amadeo Azar is a visual and sound artist born in Mar del Plata (1972), based in Buenos Aires, Argentina. He has received a grant from the Pollock-Krasner Foundation and participated in the Open Session program at the Drawing Center in New York. In his work, he focuses on drawing and painting with watercolour to support his ideas, exploring all the possibilities of the technique and pushing it to its limits. This exploration allows him to interact with other fields, such as ceramics, photography, archives, and sound, creating a personal poetic system that can encompass different universes, where he creates immersive spaces that become an active experience.

Caudal will be on display until August 30, 2025, at Dot Fiftyone Gallery’s Project Room, Miami, Florida (United States).
