Notes related to Latinoamérica

Amid the centenary of Surrealism, or at least from what is officially understood as its inception with the publication of The First Surrealist Manifesto by André Breton in 1924, it is truly significant to access an exhibition as profound as 1924: Other Surrealisms, presented by the MAPFRE Foundation in Madrid, which will later tour other locations. This exhibition is important for the centrifugal perspectives it presents, emphasizing the expansion of the main official—or officialism—ideas beyond Breton's boundaries and granting maximum importance to Latin America in the acceptance, production, and collaboration within the movement.

Architectures and Ecologies of Amazonia will take place at the University of Pennsylvania—an international, interdisciplinary symposium and exhibition that highlights the agencies that have shaped and continue to be shaped by the great region.

Casa de América, in Madrid, hosts Convergences / Divergences. Two Aesthetics in Dialogue, a complete exhibition curated by Ariel Jimenez in which Ye'kwana craftsmanship, a community of the Venezuelan Amazon rainforest, and modern and contemporary geometric abstraction, represented by more than a hundred works from the Juan Carlos Maldonado Collection, are in dialogue. The exhibition delves into the relationship between the different aesthetics developed contemporarily by both groups and, above all, highlights the reference to modern art movements and their partial debt to the techniques and motifs of the peoples of the Amazon.

The Chiloé Museum of Modern Art presents its 37th edition featuring photographs, paintings, sculptures, installations, performances, videos, and digital cinema in the exhibition Espectral (Spectral), which invites viewers to explore what stirs unease: the mysterious, the ethereal, and the unknown.

The CCCB (Center of Contemporary Culture of Barcelona) dedicates a wide, meticulous and interesting exhibition that takes us into the natural and cultural heritage of the Amazon, with special emphasis on the art and thought of the cities and indigenous communities of the region. Amazonia. The Ancestral Future brings to the table a detailed vision of artistic practices and Amazonian culture through the work of an extensive list of artists who produce around their thinking and relationship with nature.

CAF – Development Bank of Latin America and the Caribbean – and Pinta, an international platform for promoting Latin American art through fairs and artistic circuits across the region, have formalized a strategic alliance aimed at strengthening and promoting Latin American and Ibero-American art worldwide. This collaboration will culminate in a prominent Art Week to be held in Panama City in May 2025, a new initiative designed to position regional culture on the global stage.

Latin American surrealist photography will have a predominant place in the 4th edition of the Castilla y León International Photography Festival, to be held from April 17 in Palencia, Spain.
