PEMJEAN AND HIS RECONSTRUCTION OF SPACE FROM MEMORY AT COAM

By Álvaro de Benito

The Official College of Architects of Madrid (COAM) is hosting No tan lejos (Not So Far Away), an exhibition by Emilio Pemjean (Santiago, Chile, 1971), which continues to explore his characteristic artistic approach that blends photography, design, architecture, and painting. In this exhibition, the Chilean artist presents a series of imagined and reconstructed spaces, virtually brought back to life through memory, which makes their reconstruction possible.

PEMJEAN AND HIS RECONSTRUCTION OF SPACE FROM MEMORY AT COAM

The effects of decontextualization and dimensional distortions caused by time and memory are part of the imagined result that completes the process. The memory of more objective and material elements—such as plans or photographs—helps consolidate this image.

The works selected for the exhibition represent that final scene: spaces built from memory, yet perceived as receptacles of volumes and color. Their construction moves beyond the ephemeral and diffuse to become something material—even if only within the context of the exhibition—and, in a sense, permanent.

The choice to interpretively reconstruct certain periods and specific architectural schools of the past century, along with references to particular artists and movements, contributes to this sublimation within a conceptual framework.

No tan lejos is on view through September 10 at COAM, Hortaleza 63, Madrid, Spain.
