NEW PEDAGOGIES AT THE HEART OF MoMA PS1
LA ESCUELA___ debuts in the United States with a proposal that turns education into a creative and collective experience.
This November, MoMA PS1’s Homeroom will host LA ESCUELA___, an artist-driven platform dedicated to rethinking education as a creative and collective act. In its first project in the United States, the initiative will present a series of learning experiences that map and explore pedagogical models from across Latin America, connecting South America, the Caribbean, and diasporic communities in Queens and beyond.
Organized by Elena Ketelsen González (Associate Curator) with Jolene Fernandez (Homeroom Fellow) in collaboration with Miguel Braceli and Madeline Murphy Turner, the exhibition opens November 6, 2025, and invites socially engaged artists to take part in residencies and activations.
The project at PS1 will feature contributions from Laura Anderson Barbata, Lizania Cruz, and Studio Lenca. At its core is a striking centerpiece: Miguel Braceli’s large chalkboard stage, designed as a dynamic space for dialogue, performance, and knowledge exchange. Complementing this, a visual archive will trace the history of artist-run initiatives and collective learning models that inspire the platform’s work.
Founded in 2022 by Braceli with the support of Siemens Stiftung, LA ESCUELA___ champions experimental learning and collaborative creation in public spaces. Working with universities, cultural institutions, and local communities, the project develops both on-site and online programs to foster new ways of learning. With a transnational network of artists and educators, it positions education as an act of social engagement, mapping the legacies of independent pedagogical practices in Latin America and placing them in a global context.
