SELF- REALIZATION AND RESIGNIFICATION IN DIANA FONSECA

Max Estrella gallery opens its new season with Entelequia, the second solo exhibition by Cuban artist Diana Fonseca (Havana, Cuba, 1978) at the Madrid gallery. The concept underlying the exhibition’s title refers to the philosophical notion of an end or purpose that resides within oneself. In this sense, the artist relates the concept to her creative practice, which she understands as a path toward self-realization, presenting it through her most recent body of work.

Drawing primarily on personal experiences and emotions, Fonseca conceives the exhibition as a collage of emotions in which everyday objects are conceptually superimposed and transformed into metaphors for her inner world. The ways in which time is measured are called into question in El tiempo y su retórica, an arrangement of 250 books related to time placed in a circle, and in Tiempo real, an installation of incomplete clocks that continue to function. Nostalgia for her homeland is reflected in Diagrama de un recuerdo, a reconstruction of Havana’s silhouette made from pipes, as well as in Contemplación, an ocean composed of matches.

Fonseca’s work transforms ordinary objects into symbols of human experience. Scissors, clocks, books, flowers, matches, and padlocks are resinified to establish relationships with notions of memory, freedom, time, and fragility. Her artistic language invites viewers to approach the everyday from a different perspective, discovering poetic and optimistic qualities within imperfection.
