MARCELO BRODSKY: MARTIRIO AT ROLF ART
Rolf Art presented Marcelo Brodsky's exhibition MARTIRIO, in collaboration with artists Fernando Bryce, Martín Kovensky and Fredi Casco; supported by a research and conceptual approach by José Emilio Burucúa and Carles Guerra.

Marcelo Brodsky’s visual narrative is rooted in the investigation and intervention of archival images, re-inscribing and illuminating historical events, while uncovering layers of meaning that have been obscured over time.
Driven by a deep commitment to preserving memory and an awareness of the looming environmental crisis, Brodsky, in collaboration with Fernando Bryce, conceived TERRITORIOS (2022) during their joint artist residency at Espacio 23, part of the Jorge Pérez Collection in Miami, USA. This work pays tribute to ten Latin American leaders who were assassinated for defending nature, their local communities, and human rights. At the center of the piece, the dismembered figure of Túpac Amaru is depicted, symbolizing the fragmentation of both the martyr’s body and the Latin American territory. This imagery reflects the collective sense of physical disintegration caused by the degradation of ecosystems and the inadequacy of any ideology or political perspective to address it.
The depiction of Túpac Amaru as a martyr sparked an inquiry into the epistemological colonization of Latin America, laying the groundwork for the MARTIRIO series. The works in this exhibition explore the origins of the images of Túpac Amaru’s dismemberment and their enduring impact on the collective consciousness of rebellion, resonating with Michel Foucault’s analysis of surveillance and control.
MARTIRIO reveals how each image, through its historical context, accumulates successive layers of meaning. It underscores how dominant visual representations and narratives have perpetuated a fictionalized portrayal of our culture and history. Some of these narratives are steeped in spontaneous popular myth-making, while others subtly reflect the pervasive effects of colonization. By signing these pieces, Brodsky emphasizes a single, powerful geography: a diagonal “America,” a continent indelibly marked by the martyrdom of its courageous defenders.
