IN PRACTICE: CARLOS QUINTANA AT CAELUM GALLERY
The Cuban artist presents new works inspired by the Hudson River and his experiences in the United States, in a show that combines painting, process, and live presence.
Caelum Gallery (New York) presents In Practice, a three-day solo exhibition featuring a selection of works by the acclaimed contemporary Cuban artist Carlos Quintana as well as a live, working studio space with the artist himself. Renowned for his fearless use of color and dynamic interpretation of nature, his work was hailed by the late Alex Rosenberg as “original in every aspect”, inviting comparisons to “the best of post-expressionism”.
An artist constantly on the move, each canvas blends Quintana’s signature style with influences from his global journey and the world around him. Among the exhibition’s highlighted works is the things floating at the river (2025), a triptych spanning more than 20 feet wide and nearly 7 feet tall. Inspired by the Hudson River, which separates Quintana’s studio from New York City, the expanse serves as a melting pot for the artist to incorporate an incredible variety of experiences from his time in the United States.
In addition to the finished works on display, this show will offer a rare opportunity to witness contemporary Cuban art in practice as he transforms the gallery into his studio. The artist will be painting several new canvases throughout the duration of the exhibition, with artist interactions influencing the evolving works.
Carlos Quintana (b. 1966, Havana, Cuba) is known for his expressive paintings blending collective memory, fantasy, and personal symbolism. His work has earned international acclaim, with solo exhibitions across Europe and the United States. His paintings are held in numerous prominent collections including the Rubin Museum of Fine Art in New York, the Pérez Art Museum Miami in Miami, and the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes de Cuba in Havana.
Carlos Quintana: In Practice will take place from December 11th – 13th at Caelum Gallery, 508 W. 26th Street Suite 315, New York (United States).
