CRISTÓBAL ASCENCIO AND THE FRAGMENTED MEMORY OF IMAGES
The Mexican artist continues his investigation into the fragility of the digital image and its relationship with memory through processes of manipulation and transformation in this solo exhibition in Madrid.
Cristóbal Ascencio (Guadalajara, Mexico, 1988) presents his first solo exhibition at Cámara Oscura, revisiting core elements of his ongoing thesis on memory and archival registration. In Sample Library—a title evoking collections of stored files whose value resides in their generative potential—the Mexican artist investigates how these source datasets undergo transformation through successive interventions, approaching these digital operations on the image as material practice.
Consequently, the image is reduced to its minimal constituent expression, its underlying code altered until glitch and error surface. Within his practice, the image is constructed as a precarious site: it undergoes transformation while retaining traces of its original subject matter alongside the marks of subsequent interventions and reinterpretations. Photographic media thus diverges from faithful historic reproduction, mirroring the mechanisms of cognitive memory by reconstructing, fragmenting, and altering the past through processes of retrieval and erasure.

The distinct series comprising the exhibition examine this methodology from diverse perspectives to map a cartography of the contemporary image. The critical focus shifts from pictorial representation toward generative processes and structural variations. Ultimately, Ascencio proposes a critical reflection on our relationship with imagery, positioning the intersection of photography, technology, and materiality to challenge the stability and presumed objectivity of the visible.
Cristóbal Ascencio. Sample Library is on view from September 10 through December 23, 2026, at Cámara Oscura Galería de Arte, Calle Alameda, 16, 1º B, Madrid, Spain.
