BOTERO'S PAINTING IN DETAIL AT PALAU MARTORELL
The Palau Martorell in Barcelona is hosting Fernando Botero. Un maestro universal (Fernando Botero. A Universal Master), the most comprehensive exhibition of paintings by Fernando Botero (Medellín, Colombia, 1932 – Monte Carlo, Monaco, 2023) ever held in Spain. This exhibition offers a detailed exploration of the Colombian artist’s career, highlighting his mastery of various painting techniques and the scope of his artistic output.

More than 110 works are on display, including sculptures, oil paintings, watercolors, charcoal, sanguine, and pencil drawings from private collections—many of which have never been shown before. The exhibition allows visitors to appreciate Botero’s richness and versatility in painting techniques, while also exploring his relationship with his surroundings and the themes that deeply influenced him. Among these, particular attention is given to his ties with Latin American identity, religion and belief systems, the world of the circus, still-life, and the history of art itself. The exhibition presents both his interpretations of classical works and some of his most iconic series related to these enduring themes in his oeuvre.
In addition to this thematic and representational overview, the exhibition also highlights the significant influence that Spain and Italy had on Botero’s artistic development. On view for the first time in Spain is his version of Las Meninas by Velázquez, which once hung in his Paris studio, alongside Homage to Mantegna, an extraordinary loan from a private collection in the United States—two standout works within the exhibition.
