REFLECTIONS ON CONTROL AND FRAGILITY IN NUEVEOCHENTA GALLERY
José Olano (Cali, 1985) presents Lo que nos sostiene (What sustains us), an exhibition made up of videos, photographs and installations in the gallery’s Main Room. His works rise from the interest in balance and equilibrium.
Olano's artistic work questions artworks themselves from an ephemeral point of view. Likewise, the artist creates a poetic in which the viewer participates in an immersive experience due to the size of each of the pieces.
On the day of the inauguration, Olano performed a performance in the Plaza de las Flores located on Avenida Caracas between 68th and 69th streets, which consisted of sitting in a wooden chair that was suspended on four glass vases; holding on his head a stone with vegetation. This performance in public space opened a dialogue about the body and its role within the work of art.

“Olano manages to create a harmonic game between different found objects: a beam from an abandoned house in Cartagena, a chair, a glass, among others.” writes Luciana Rizo, the exhibition’s curator. “Objects, by their nature, are built with a purpose or objective that determines their use. Olano takes these, strips them of their usefulness and turns them into protagonists of his work. In this particular formal exploration, the glass becomes the support of the chair; the artist’s body in the element of fragility and some construction beams in suspension pieces. This way of ready-made evokes the previously mentioned antagonistic concepts, giving way to a broad reflection on the sense and meaning of the objects we use on a daily basis.”
