GONZALO HERNÁNDEZ IS THE CHOSEN ONE FOR MOAD RESIDENCY

Throughout the summer, Gonzalo will develop new works, engage with students, and open his studio to the public. In doing so, he will create spaces for dialogue and reflection around the creative process, identity, and the role of the artist in educational institutions.

His multidisciplinary practice—which spans installation, sculpture, painting, photography, and film—draws from autobiographical experiences to explore themes of belonging, labor, and material culture. From cardboard found in factories to shopping lists written on his hand, Gonzalo transforms the everyday into poetic, meaning-laden works.

Gonzalo Hernandez (Lima, Peru, 1991) is a Peruvian-American artist and educator based in Miami. He studied at Corriente Alterna School of Visual Arts in Lima and recently earned a Master of Fine Arts as well as a Master in Fibers and Painting from the Savannah College of Art and Design.

His work delves into personal narratives connected to contemporary dilemmas such as labor, success and failure, the art world, and identity. As an immigrant, his installations, paintings, and textile works are deeply rooted in his personal perspective while also addressing broader cultural associations. Blurring the boundaries between art and life, Hernandez finds truth and meaning in what often goes unnoticed, using everyday encounters with text, language, and materials as fuel for symbolic interpretation.
