Y.ES Contemporary creates opportunities for outstanding Salvadoran contemporary artists to advance their artistic practice and engage with artists, curators, collectors, gallerists and the media within and outside El Salvador. Y.ES Contemporary is an initiative of the Robert S. Wennett and Mario Cader-Frech Foundation.

 

Y.ES Artist Grants are dedicated to supporting exhibitions, projects and travel opportunities. This year you can apply for aid between $ 1,000 and $ 5,000. The grant is open to international artists who work with or deal with subjects relevant to El Salvador.

 

This year the Y.ES artist grants will be awarded by an expert jury that includes (from left to right) Pablo León de la Barra, curator of UBS MAP Guggenheim, Latin America, at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum; Teresa Velázquez, Head of the exhibition area of the Reina Sofía Museum, Madrid; and Mauricio Kabistan, Salvadoran artist and curator.

 

        

Pablo León de la Barra

Born in Mexico City in 1972, Pablo León de la Barra earned his Ph.D in Histories and Theories from the Architectural Association, London. He has curated or co-curated more than a dozen exhibitions over the past decade, including The Camino Real Arcades (2012), Proyecto AMIL, Lima, Peru; Novo Museo Tropical, Teorética, San Jose, Costa Rica (2012); Microclimas, Kunsthalle Zürich, Switzerland (2012); Marta ‘Che’ Traba, Museo La Ene, Buenos Aires (cocurated with Beatriz López, 2012); Incidents of Mirror Travel in Yucatan and Elsewhere, Museo Rufino Tamayo, Mexico City (2011); Incidentes de Viaje en Centroamérica, Chiapas, Yucatán y otros lugares [Incidents of Travel in Central America, Chiapas, Yucatan and Elsewhere], Centro Cultural de España, Guatemala City (2010), and To Be Political it Has to Look Nice, apexart and Art in General, New York (2003). In London, he was a founding member of 24-7, a collective of artists and curators (2002–05), artistic director of Blow de la Barra Gallery (2005–08), and founder and co-curator of the community art space White Cubicle Gallery (2005–12). He is also the founder of the Novo Museo Tropical, and was the curator of the first Bienal Tropical in San Juan, Puerto Rico (2011). León de la Barra received the first Colección Patricia Phelps de Cisneros Travel Award for Central America and the Caribbean.

 

Teresa Velázquez Cortés

She graduated from the University of Valencia with a major in Art History.

She attended the City University of New York and received a Master of Arts Degree in Art History and Museum Studies. She also has completed the Master’s program in European Leisure Studies (Vrije University, Tilburg University, University of Deusto and Loughborough University). Currently she is Head of Exhibitions at the Reina Sofía Museum in Madrid, Spain. She has held this position since 2008. Prior to her work at the Reina Sofía Museum, she was in charge of the cultural space Matadero Madrid in 2007. From 2004 to 2006, she was the Director of the Patio Herreriano Museum of Contemporary Art in Valladolid, Spain. In 2003 she was part of the Arts and Culture Division of Madrid's City Council. In 2002 she coordinated the network of Cultural Centers, a section of the International Spanish Cooperation Agency, after serving as the Director of the Spanish Cultural Center in Lima, Perú, from 1997 until the end of 2001. She managed the Program of Art in the Public Spaces for the Universal Exposition, Expo '92 that was held in Seville, Spain in 1992. Velázquez has curated exhibitions on the work of Lygia Pape, Lee Lozano, Dora García and Tetsuya Ishida, among others, and was part of the team that curated Playgrounds. Reinventing the Square.

 

Mauricio Kabistan
