MEXICO: SOMA WEDNESDAY WITH TANIA BRUGUERA
Next Wednesday, August 8th, the artist Tania Bruguera will be the protagonist of Wednesday SOMA, a program organized by the Mexican organization every week. On this occasion, with the collaboration of the University Museum of Contemporary Art (MUAC).
Formed the Escuela Superior de Arte de La Habana, la Escuela Elemental de Artes Plásticas 20 de Octubre and the Art Institute Chicago, Tania Bruguera developed all her work in a constant dialogue between these two geographies.
Likewise, political activism and the conception of art as a tool are fundamental elements at her artistic career: from the performances carried out in the 90s such as El Peso de la Culpa (The Weight of Guilt), to the current public art that seeks a citizenship of the spectator of art. The Cuban artist has managed to position the artist in an instigating role in relation to politics, constituting, in turn, alternative institutions or generating spaces for collective construction.
The space that SOMA provides to Bruguera is made in collaboration with the MUAC, within the framework of Hablandole al poder (Talking to Power), an individual exhibition of the artist at the museum. Bruguera's most recent works are particularly focused on the construction of groups / communities that emerge as shapers of the political agenda with clear objectives: to obtain answers to the denial of rights to the migrant community, both in Mexico and in the United States.
