THE RED GREENHOUSE, AN INSTALLATION TO THINK ABOUT THE FUTURE

At the Centro Cultural Conde Duque (Madrid, Spain) the Chilean artist Patrick Hamilton presents the sculptural installation The Red Greenhouse. Conceived by the artist to occupy public space, the oeuvre is located in the Patio Sur of the Madrid cultural centre and is free to visit.

The exhibition of the installation is commissioned by MadBlue, a platform aimed at promoting multiple artistic expressions with an environmental perspective that foster new models of economic, cultural and social production.

The Red Greenhouse is an interactive sculpture conceived in the form of a tunnel. Using the architecture of a greenhouse as a model, Hamilton changed the transparent methacrylate plates (which greenhouses usually have) for red plates. With this chromatic gesture, the artist transforms the structure into a polysemous political denunciation.

On the one hand, the greenhouse object directly alludes to the notion of greenhouse gases. The fact of dyeing the walls red, therefore, adds to these notions a veil woven of both psychological and social associations: blood, fire, incandescence, infrared radiation, the red numbers in economics.

On the other hand, the interactive character of the installation adds another set of connotations beyond those elicited by Hamilton's visual operation. Visitors can enter the greenhouse. From inside, not only is the landscape tinged with red, but even more important is the role that the artwork assigns to the visitor. Viewers become agents within the medium in a movement that makes them part of what is being denounced.

Curated by David Barro (Coruña, 1974), founder of the Fundación DIDAC, The Red Greenhouse is a simple project but one that establishes a multiplicity of dialogues with the artistic, architectural, economic, social and political environment in which it is inscribed. As usual in Patrick Hamilton's work, it is small gestures that challenge the attentive visitor.
