FRANCISCO MEDAIL CLOSES HIS CYCLE AS BAPHOTO ARTISTIC DIRECTOR
BAphoto announces the departure of its artistic director Francisco Medail after six years at the art fair. Medail took started at BAphoto in 2015, after a successful debut as curator of the young section Fuera de Foco (Out of Focus) the previous year. Since then he has directed the content of five presential editions and the virtual edition BAphoto Live. During his tenure, Medail worked on a strategic content programme to diversify the range of projects on offer and strengthen the development of photography in the local art circuit. Over the course of these years, curators of different ages and backgrounds took part in the fair, such as Alfredo Aracil, Mercedes Claus, Laura Hakel, Ariel Authier, Rodrigo Alonso, Jazmin Adler, Ana Luiza Fonseca, Florencia Portocarrero, Valeria González and José Antonio Navarrete.
Together with Diego Costa Peuser, founder of BAphoto and executive director of Arte al Día International, they developed a series of objectives to strengthen the presence of the fair in the region and link photographic production with different art institutions. In addition to building alliances with museums and foundations throughout the region.
Medail will continue to be linked to the fair as a consultant advisor and as curator of the tribute exhibition, a section aimed to highlight artists who have been displaced from the traditional historiographical narrative. Since 2016 Medail has been holding exhibitions on Juan Di Sandro, Frans van Riel, Pepe Fernández, Pedro Otero and Foto Estudio Luisita, among others.
BAphoto is scheduled to be held in person in October 2021, as long as the epidemiological situation resulting from Covid-19 allows it. After its virtual edition, the fair is undergoing a process of transformation as part of the relaunch of the Pinta brand on a continental level and its expansion into new parts of the world. The new contents and surprises planned for the next edition will be announced soon.
