David Brooks, Artist-in-Residence at De La Cruz Collection from Miami Will Discuss His Current Work

David Brooks, Artist-in-Residence at the de la Cruz Collection will discuss his current work and its tangled relationship with art, nature and the everyday at its headquarters Wednesday January 12 at 2pm. Brooks is a sculptor and installation artist whose work investigates how cultural concerns cannot be divorced from the natural world. His work is engaged with examining the cause and effect of ecological crisis and questioning the terms under which nature is perceived and utilized. While in Miami, he is continuing his field research in the Everglades and Florida Keys.

Brooks is the fourth artist in the Residency Program sponsored by the de la Cruz Collection since its inception in the spring of 2010. This program gives the opportunity to spend 4-6 weeks in Miami exploring the history, culture and natural resources of South Florida. Mary Ceruti, Director of the SculptureCenter, a non-collecting contemporary art museum in New York, has been collaborating throughout the year with the de la Cruz Collection in the selection of artists.

David Brooks was born in Brazil, Indiana in 1975 and has exhibited large-scale installations at MoMA PS1, the SculptureCenter NY, the Dallas Contemporary, and a migrating sculpture for Lisbon’s Portugal Arte 2010. His work has been exhibited internationally at Blank Beijing, China, Tanya Bonakdar Gallery, D’Amelio Terras, Gavin Brown’s Enterprise and Museum 52, NYC. Brooks received his BFA from the Cooper Union and an MFA from Columbia University. In 2009 he received a Socrates Sculpture Park Fellowship, and a research grant to the Peruvian Amazon from the Coypu Foundation. In 2010 he received a grant from the Foundation for Contemporary Arts.
