VIGIL GONZALES PRESENTS WORK BY GONZALO HERNÁNDEZ IN ITS ONLINE VIEWING ROOM

These drawings analyze how familiar words, phrases, and personal narratives can be dramatically redefined as everyday perspectives change, all taking on new meaning. In the drawings, we find texts, words and images -each piece is unique- phrases such as “there are no miracles here” or “everything comes from here <3”, they are related to the artist's daily life and the daily stresses of contemporary life .

The artist's daily practice is revealed in this selection of drawings, showing us what the artist thinks every day. With this selection, you can broadly see the interests that Hernández has. The opportunity to see these works takes us to his studio in the mornings, where he has ideas and thoughts that he puts on paper every day.

Gonzalo Hernández's multifaceted artistic practice addresses personal narratives related to contemporary dilemmas such as work, success and failure, and identity. Starting from autobiographical circumstances, his installations, sculptures, paintings, photographs, and films are very particular in his perspective as an immigrant, while addressing broader cultural associations. Eliminating the distinction between art and life, the artist considers that many situations and materials are viable to include in his work, however banal or everyday they may be. From the piles of cardboards found on the floors of the factories where he worked and turned into relief sculptures, to the grocery lists quickly scrawled in his hand and photographed on his iPhone, the artist finds truth and meaning in what that is overlooked. Daily encounters with text, language, and material become fodder for symbolic interpretations.

Gonzalo Hernández (b. 1991) lives and works between Miami and Lima, Peru. He studied at the Alternate School of Visual Arts and has an MFA in Textiles and Painting from the Savannah College of Art and Design. His work has been exhibited internationally, with recent solo and group exhibitions, including) :) at the Scad Museum of Art; Sorry Not Sorry: positions, provisions and oppositions, curated by Max Hernandez, at CCPUCP, Lima; The Artist as Muse, curated by Ariella Wolens and Ben Tollefson, at the Gutstein Gallery, Savannah; Georgia Artists of Hispanic / Latinx Origin at the Georgia Museum of Contemporary Art, Atlanta; Java at La Vitrina de la Officina m20 Hotel Savoy Lima; Threaded, curated by Mark Newport and Maria-Elisa Heg at the MCC Gallery of Art, Mesa, Arizona; and To Paris to Lima in the French Alliance of Lima. Hernández was part of Chuquimarca's first residency program in Chicago in 2020 and was also an Artist in Residence at Longroadprojects and Erie Arts and Culture in Erie, Pa.
