LINE, FORM AND SPACE IN GEGO AT ELVIRA GONZÁLEZ
Galería Elvira González in Madrid presents Gego. Line, Form and Space, an exhibition dedicated to the work of Gego (born Gertrud Goldschmidt, Hamburg, Germany, 1912 – Caracas, Venezuela, 1994), featuring 45 works on paper and four sculptures that reflect her exploration of space, line, and structure. The show brings together pieces from different periods of the artist’s career, spanning from the 1950s—when she began her artistic journey and discovered her fascination with the line—to the early 1990s.
Throughout these decades, Gego evolved in her approach to materials and, drawn to the possibilities of geometric abstraction, began imagining networks and creating a universe of interconnections. She developed a distinct personal voice within the movement, shaped by her background as an architect and engineer. This is especially evident in her use of three-dimensional lines, often constructed from steel wire.
The exhibition includes key works such as 4 módulos (1973) and Sin título (1977), where knots and connections form delicate structures that assert themselves in space despite their apparent fragility. Across the full exhibition, a range of drawings, sketches, watercolors, and graphic works emphasize the artist’s deep engagement with geometry and its creative potential.
Gego. Línea, forma y espacio is on view through May 24 at Galería Elvira González, Hermanos Álvarez Quintero 1, Madrid (Spain).
