Workshop with Dora García and Fire To The Prisons at OPA

Because of her individual exposition in OPA Por nada, contra todo / For Nothing Against Everything, the artist Dora García will offer a workshop for the interested public that will happen on November 25 from 10 am to 2 pm, at the OPA headquarters.

Dora Garcia has been been selected by Katya Garcia-Anton, curator of the Spanish Pavilion, to represent Spain in the following Venice Biennale that will take place in 2011.

Since her exposition, Last Days in Pau, France, about dystopian societies, Dora García has admired the New York libertarian Fire to The Prisons (www.firetotheprisons.com). She admires it first because of the formal sobriety and the humor of communicating a burning message (metaphorically), but also because of the structural quality of marginal resistance and dissidence, in which she sees relations with her own work and, specifically, with some of the pieces of the exposition. Dora García thinks that resistance and dissidence are also a way to define the relationship between author and public, and she took advantage of the opportunity that OPA is giving her to discuss all of this with the Fire To The Prisons magazine and those who assist the workshop.

This artist is particularly interested in the analysis of paradigms and art conventions, and therefore, confronts frequently the issue of power and its dynamics. Her work is also aimed at decoding the relationship between the artist and the audience, and using fiction to question the ethical and moral elements of this relationship. She sees each exhibition as an opportunity to experiment, interfere, distort, and play with the expectations of the audience, forcing everyone to question the purpose of the project, the role he/she plays in it, and therefore, to reconsider the art world and its rules. These factors, plus many others, are the reason why Dora Garcia is an artist who will be able to navigate the special context of the Biennale by combining, in the work presented here, intellectual acuity with a dose of black humor.
