Symposium at MOCA, Miami

Focused on Innovative Contemporary Art Organizations in Latin America

The Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA), North Miami is hosting a three-day international symposium titled New Methods / Nuevos Métodos from May 4 - 6, 2011, examining the boom of independent artistic activity in Latin America. The symposium will focus on artist-run organizations from throughout the region that have emerged from the need for independent education for working artists.

MOCA, Miami

Organizations that will participate in the symposium include: Centro de Investigaciones Artisticas (CIA) in Buenos Aires, Argentina; Proyectos Ultravioleta in Guatemala City, Guatemala; Casa Tres Patios in Medellin, Colombia; SOMA in Mexico City, Mexico; Capacete in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; Kiosko Galeria in Santa Cruz, Bolivia; and Beta-Local in San Juan, Puerto Rico, among others.

The three-day symposium, which will be open to the public, will be the first time that leaders from these Latin American organizations will be able to meet together at the same time in the United States, publicly address their practices, and increase communication among themselves. In bringing the organizations together, MOCA, North Miami will serve as a hub between Latin America, the United States and the international art world in highlighting the work of the participating organizations and connecting innovative artistic practices in Latin America with the Miami community and other audiences around the world.

Participating organizations meet criteria that include: a focus on community building in their region; promotion of education of practicing artists through the organization of lectures and facilitation of discussions about contemporary art; investment in exchange by bringing international figures to their organizations through hosting guest artists and lectures or through artist residency programs; and non-profit status or the adherence to non-profit ideals.

Research conducted by MOCA Associate Curator Ruba Katrib will inform the topics discussed during the three-day symposium. Representatives from the selected organizations will travel to MOCA, North Miami and will present their programs on the symposium’s first day. The following two days will focus on particular topics, questions, concerns, experiences and successes that will be developed through the previous research conducted. Other invited experts will also participate in the conversations.

A publication featuring scholarly essays written by Ruba Katrib and others, symposium transcripts, and other materials will be available following the symposium.

Funding for New Methods/ Nuevos Metodos is provided by The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts.
