Florencio Gelabert at the Pontevedra Biennal in Spain

El Salidero and El Desagüe (2010) are two site-specific works that the Cuban-American artist Florencio Gelabert is presenting at the XXXI Pontevedra Biennial in Spain. The pieces will be exhibited at the new Art Museum of Pontevedra, from June 4 through Sep 12.

" El Desagüe" 2010 11.50' x 9' x 8.25' plexiglass mirrored & clear, PVC pipe, clear resin, food, artificial & real flowers, papier mache

“My intention is to alter the spaces by blocking one of the hallways and “breaking” one of the gallery walls, creating a new geography in the Museum’s landscape.”, says the artist
The pieces continue the spirit of Gelabert’s most recent series of works and illustrate his reaction to present concerns for environmental challenges and pollution. In one of these works, a waste pipe is spilling a material containing food leftovers, feces, mixed with artificial flowers and plants. In the second one, an old pipe with a water leak is emerging from a broken wall, from which a tree branch is also coming out.

“These works -he said- are in the spirit of Arte Povera and post-minimalism, but they are also characterized by my interest in provoking different reactions from the viewers.”
