arteBA celebrates its anniversary edition

Currently acclaimed as one of the most important fairs in the region, arteBA has managed to become, since its creation in 1991, a meeting point that witnessed the deep changes in the visual art’s scenario (and its acceptance as an institution) in Argentina: this event saw the rising of new galleries, museums, foundations, alternative sites and artistic projects of all kinds, thus granting an unusual visibility to contemporary art. For this important anniversary, arteBA 2016 edition 25 -that will take place from May 19th to 22nd at La Rural convention center in Buenos Aires- will celebrate its quarter-century on the local scene by programming a series of activities that will go beyond the physical premises of the La Rural convention center and connect with the major museums and institutions of Buenos Aires, in order to offer a complete experience dedicated to contemporary art and pay homage to the growth of a shared art panorama.
Within the framework of this celebration, we have invited the three winners of our Young Curators Program to prepare a special edition for the DIXIT section: Federico Baeza, Lara Marmor and Sebastián Vidal Mackinson. They will present Oasis, a curatorial proposal with over 50 artists and 900 m2, reviewing the art works produced in
Argentina in the last years and which will offer, for the first time, a space other than for exhibition purposes, that would serve as the platform of talks and activities connected to literature, cinema and theatre. To this commemoration of Argentine art, we shall add a strong international presence, represented by 43 foreign art galleries arriving from Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, France, Germany, Italy, Mexico, the Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, the United States, Uruguay. These visitors, together with 42 Argentine art galleries shall have a prominent role in arteBA.2016, by participating, with 400 artists, in the different sections put forth by the fair: The Main Section (Selection Committee: Mercedes Casanegra, Orly Benzacar, Ignacio Liprandi, Eduardo Brandão y Sabine Schmidt) will comprise 50 art galleries, out of which 11 will be involved in the Special Project Patio Bullrich, whereas 15 will feature a distinguished artist in the Cabinet section (Consulting Committee: Mercedes Casanegra, Inés Katzenstein y Eugenio Valdés Figueroa). For the third edition of Photobooth Citi, its curator, Patrick Charpenel, will explore the boundaries of photography through 6 international artistic proposals set in context with documentation of the Argentine avant-garde, captured from Raul Naon’s archives. Solo Show Zurich also reaches its third edition, and for the second year in a row, it will have Manuel Segade as its curator. On this year’s proposal, it will explore the body as an artistic tool through multiple disciplines, such as painting, performance and video. In U-TURN Project Rooms by Mercedes-Benz’s new edition, Jacopo Crivelli Visconti will bet high on a more personal curatorial work, for which he selected the 35 artists to be featured by the 14 participating art galleries; and the artistic intervention organized by this section in the central square will be something of a novelty this year. Lastly, and in contrast to the consummate artists exhibited in the Main Section, Barrio Joven Chandon will display a wide range of experimental proposals of the 16 young art galleries selected by the curatorial team, integrated by Raúl Flores and Manuela Moscoso.
