Buenos Aires Photo returns for its 12th anniversary

Since its inception in 2005, BAphoto has worked to promote the growth and development of photography within the arts and strengthen its production and value internationally. Through the years, the fair has managed to become a reference point for Latin American photography and a meeting place for artists, curators, critics, journalists, and new collectors to satisfy their increasing interest in this medium.  BA Photo will be relocating to La Rural in Buenos Aires. The new venue will provide the much-needed space for the increasing number of participants, international presence, diverse institutions, and sponsors.

“As we celebrate the 12th anniversary of BAphoto, we are very excited to be moving into a new, larger venue. This change is accompanied by new exhibitors, new sponsors, and expanded programs,” explained Diego Costa Peuser, chairman and founder of BAphoto.

This year’s program is divided into several sections. The Main Section (Sector Principal) is comprised of a group of pre-selected galleries of local and international specialized galleries. Out of Focus (Fuera de Foco) is a solo project section designed for the exploration of different procedures, languages, and materials that are available to photography. As a visibility platform for new artists, Out of Focus invites three galleries thatbring individual and experimental installations that allow for an open dialogue with other disciplines in order to generate new experiences and reflect on photography as an artistic production. The Link Project is a space that strengthens curatorial practices in photography in Argentina. Based on the participant galleries, the fair invites a young curator to put together a selection that would allow him/her to exercise a new artistic narrative. This project encourages connections between artists, curators, and galleries. Wunderkamer is dedicated to heritage photography. It emphasizes the beginnings of photography in its various materiality, technological processes and social practices. It also takes on the challenge of highlighting putting value in historical photographic material and documentary.

As in previous years, BAphoto will feature an international photographer as a Guest Artist (Artista Invitado). In the past this section has showcased the works of world-renowned artists such as Joan Fontcuberta, Carlos Garaicoa, Luis Gonzalez Palma, Milagros de la Torre, and Luz Maria Bedoya. This year, BAphoto will welcome world-renowned Brazilian photographer Claudia Andujar. After the resounding success of her exhibit at MALBA (Museo de Arte Latinoamericano de Buenos Aires), this exhibit will show a more comprehensive look at her work.  Since 2015, the fair implemented a tribute section known as Tribute Artist (Artista Homenaje). This tribute is given to artists that have had an active participation in photography in Argentina as way value their relevance in local history. Past tributes include: Annemarie Henrich , Sammer Makarius, Anatole Sanderman and George Friedman. This year, BAphoto will pay homage to Juan Di Sandro, historical photojournalist from La Nacion newspaper and member of La Carpeta de los Diez. The gallery Vasari currently represents him.

“Having Claudia Andujar as our Guest Artist and Juan Di Sandro as our Tribute Artist is a testament of the fair’s growth in content and popularity,” explained Costa Peuser. “Our programs continue to grow and be strengthen by the local and international galleries, and our special sections.”

Also part of BAphoto will be Feria Tijuana de Arte Impresa (Tijuana Printed Art Fair), which researches and focuses on books by artists from around the world. This fair has experience exponential growth since its inception. Their main goal is to be a platform for printed art in all its forms and to strengthen its production, exchange and dissemination.  For this year’s edition, the fair has selected ten Latin American editorial to both exhibit and sell books from the many different countries.  For its second consecutive year, BAphoto will present a Video Project. This space looks to recognize and legitimize the artist within the moving picture Argentinian circuit. These pieces will be exhibited in the New Media Pavilion in La Rural.

BAphoto (Buenos Aires Photo) is part of three events founded and organized by Diego Costa Peuser, who is also the founder of Arte al Dia International. These platforms have been and continue to be crucial to the development and popularity of Latin American art around the world.  The fair will open from October 13 – 16 from 2 pm – 9 pm at La Rural Predio Ferial in Buenos Aires.
