Walter Otero presents All Things New by José Julio Martínez & Ricardo Morales-Hernández

All Things New, a double solo show presenting the works of José Julio Martínez and Ricardo Morales-Hernández. For this exhibition, in their own formal language each artist develops the concept of contemplation, representation and perception of the landscape that surrounds us. Martínez with his plein air practice retires to rural areas selecting the desired landscape to depict on canvas. As he visits different forests in Puerto Rico, the artist approaches his surroundings with empathy, focusing on the life and energy that inhabits each space. Through loose brushstrokes and thick layers of oil paint, Martínez work is a testimony to his experiences with nature.  On the other hand, Ricardo Morales-Hernández in diverse formats creates drawings and paintings where paradisiac imagery is transcribed evoking musical notations, real and imagined flora that reminisce their tropical surroundings. Throughout his work the artist is able to solve with simplicity the relationship of life and biodiversity overcoming his worldviews of infinite complexities.

José Julio Martínez, emerging Puerto Rican artist graduated from the university of Puerto Rico, Rio Piedras campus with a bachelor’s degree in painting. Martínez work focuses on landscapes as the main subject matter, in these he references the work of the impressionist and postimpressionists as well as current tendencies in painting. Was selected as one of the artists to exhibit in Artejangueo in the Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico, 2016. and participated in the XVI edition of the Muestra Nacional, exhibition by the Instituto de Cultura de Puerto Rico, 2015.

The work of Ricardo Morales-Hernández depicts a personal, political and cosmic story by means of analogue, digital and biological processes. Morales-Hernández work, on occasions, is developed by collaborative efforts of volunteers throughout the Internet and traveling workshops in Europe and Latin America. He has been recipient of multiple awards, grants and residencies, among them: Center of Photography CPW,NY—Andy Warhol Foundation, National Endowment for the Arts y Center for Image Science in Austria, in others
