Curated by Jaider Esbell, and within the context of the 34^th Bienal de São Paulo, the group exhibition Moquém_Surarî gathers contemporary artworks by indigenous artists. The exhibition at MAM São Paulo will include drawings, paintings, photographs and sculptures referring to the visual transformations on the cosmological and the narrative Amerindian thinking.

Voluspa Jarpa’s Syndemic is the winner of the inaugural edition of the Julius Baer Art Prize for Latin American Female Artists, a new biennial award initiated by Julius Baer and The Museum of Modern Art of Bogotá – MAMBO. It is the first of its kind to be held in Latin America, and its mission is to honor the research of outstanding Latin American female artists. Syndemic is a site-specific multimedia project that involves photos, archival documents, videos, maps, sculptures, objects, installation, wallpapers, and lasers that project beyond the Museum’s physical space into the surrounding environment. The term “Syndemic”, from the medical field, is Voluspa Jarpa’s metaphor to analyze the violent social riots that occurred from October 2019 to March 2020 in Chile.

For the first time in its history, the longest running Latin American photography fair that can be visited from October 13 to 17, combines its classic in-person edition with a special online program where national and international art coexist. Located at Casa Basavilbaso, the long-awaited reunion will be complemented by an online program that includes Live Talks, Open Files and guided tours.

Designed to reflect the various aspects of the current transitional experience, the 7th Athens Biennale ECLIPSE aspires to address the viewers’ imagination of potential parallel worlds and futures. ECLIPSE activates a cross-cultural conversation among artistic voices that have historically been pushed to the periphery and orchestrates an experiential shift in art viewing.

The work of Carola Zech, Argentinian artist of German descent, arrived, starting September 25th, at the German Embassy in Buenos Aires. A site-specific intervention, “Al azar del viento” (At the wind’s random will) is curated by Diana Weschler, also of German descent, and can be visited until November 28th as part of BIENALSUR 2021’s expositions.

How to situate the artistic dimension - and with it the reflection on the environment and the human condition - in a natural landscape that dazzles those who inhabit it?

High Line Art presents Insectageddon, a free day-long festival conceived by artist and poet Cecilia Vicuña. As a celebration of insects and call to action to address global insect die-off, Insectageddon will consist of interdisciplinary and interactive performances, poetry readings, workshops, and more throughout the High Line. Taking place on September 25, 2021.

The exhibition places the matter of "ways of living" in the La Boca area, linking works that reproduce utopias and failures of modernity. Curated by Diana Wechsler, Benedetta Casini and Leandro Martínez Depietri, this new exhibition in Buenos Aires brings together the works of artists from the BIENALSUR Open Call and historical and contemporary artists that make up the collections of the Emilio Pettoruti Provincial Museum of Fine Arts, of the Banco Ciudad, the Benito Quinquela Martín Museum and the IIAC-UNTREF Archive.

The memorial of the Cuban artist Arturo Cuenca Sigarreta (1955-2021), held on the same September 21 as his birth, in the American Museum of the Cuban Diaspora, was a symbolic event, surely the first of many that, after his early death, will finally allow the artistic institutions to recognize the visionary character in the work of this unruly and complex creator, who, like few others, embodied a way of criticizing power, both institutional and political, that did not compromise with convenience.

In the weeks leading up to the fair and as part of the Media Point 2021 space, an Education Cycle in Contemporary Photography will be scheduled that will consist of three masterclasses led by renowned professionals in the photographic field. This is the first mid-career survey of Colombian artist Oscar Muñoz’s work in the United States. Although he has had large-scale retrospectives throughout Europe and Latin America, this exhibition will introduce U.S. audiences to a broad scope of his evolving practice.

The acclaimed Korean artist Kimsooja will inaugurate on Wednesday September 22nd the last part of her trilogy of simultaneous exhibitions through which she landed in Buenos Aires. Chapter 3: Kimsooja. An inner experience arrives at the Korean Cultural Center in the Argentine capital as a part of Bienalsur 2021, the biennial that emerged at the Universidad Nacional de Tres de Febrero and that now takes place simultaneously in more than 124 venues, 23 countries and 50 cities around the world, with the participation of about 400 artists.

Gertrudes Altschul (1904–1962) was a pioneering figure in Brazilian modernist photography. Despite being acknowledged in the field in Brazil, her work is known only in specialized circles, having been scantly published and exhibited—something that this exhibition, the first in a museum, and its publication intend to rectify.

This Must Be the Place: Latin American Artists in New York, 1965–1975 is a group exhibition that explores the artworks, performances, and experimental practices of this generation of artists, as well as their involvement in the local art scene. Diversifying the city’s artistic life, these artists helped shape New York into the global art center it is today. The artworks presented in this exhibition are central to understanding the social and political landscape in the Americas and the tensions and bridges between north and south, exploring issues of migration, identity, politics, exile, and nostalgia.

By next Saturday, September 18, visitors will be able to view Christo and Jeanne-Claude’s completed artwork L’Arc de Triomphe, Wrapped, Paris, 1961-2021. In accordance with Christo’s wishes, the artwork is being completed by his team in partnership with the Centre des monuments nationaux (CMN) and with the support of the Centre Pompidou and the City of Paris.

The Saudi artist presents his work for the first time in Argentina in the framework of BIENALSUR 2021. Under the curatorial axis Politics of art, his solo exhibition “Silence still inhabits us” opened at the MUNTREF Sede Hotel de Inmigrantes. One of the main art events in Latin America, after a one-year postponement due to the pandemic, opens its main exhibition Faz escuro mas eu canto [Though it’s dark, still I sing] with more than one thousand works by 91 artists. BIENALSUR, the contemporary art international biennial that was crafted in the Universidad Nacional de Tres de Febrero, in Argentina, has recently disembarked with “Punto de Fuga” (Vanishing Point), a collective exhibition set in another university, the Universidad Nacional de La Plata, on Thursday, September 9th. The display features artists from countries as diverse as Argentina, Germany, Ecuador, Iran and Switzerland, and is set in the university’s Art Center.

In the framework of the 109th edition of the National Visual Arts Salon 2020-2021 Argentina, Viviana Zargón won the first non-acquisition prize for the best work in the Photography category with her artwork Objetos memorables, exhibited in one of the two venues that house the set of 266 selected works during the event, and that will remain open to the public until October 31.

BIENALSUR 2021, the third edition of the International Biennial of Contemporary Art of the South, opens in Cuenca, Ecuador, the exhibition Juliana Vidal. The Silence of Forms in the Municipal Museum of Modern Art. Vidal (Cuenca, Ecuador, 1993) has been developing a subtle poetics of the imprint - intimately linked to time and memory - using alginate, a chemical substance sensitive to the impression of physical signals. The renowned writer and curator Cristóbal Zapata, who directed the Cuenca Art Biennial, joins BIENALSUR to curate this necessary and intelligent exhibition.

The first major exhibition on Cuban artist Mariano Rodríguez (1912–90) in the United States, this retrospective features over 140 oil paintings, watercolors, and drawings from leading museum and private collections, including the artist's estate, which has provided unprecedented access to rarely seen works and archives.

The Museum of Art of Lima - MALI presents this exhibition of the outstanding Peruvian artist curated by the historian and art critic Luis Eduardo Wuffarden. Based on the so-called mixed race paintings commissioned by Viceroy Manuel de Amat y Junyent and sent to the King of Spain Carlos III in 1770, Sandra Gamarra commissioned their reproduction to a copyists' workshop in China. On these she added quotes from different contemporary feminist thinkers. In response to the absence of original works in Peru, this series, made up of twenty paintings, has been donated by LiMac to the MALI collection of contemporary art.

It’ll be the third time that BIENALSUR comes to the Brazilian embassy in Buenos Aires, in the imposing Pereda Palace. Starting September 8th, Paula Parisot, the Rio-born artist, will be presenting her exhibition Literatura del yo (“Literature of the self”), curated by Argentinian María José Herrera.

BIENALSUR 2021 arrives at the Francis Naranjo Foundation, in the Canary Islands, Spain with A New Order. Breaking Down Borders, an exhibition curated by Diana Wechsler, artistic director of the contemporary art biennial that celebrates its third edition in more than 23 countries, 50 cities and 124 venues in five continents. The exhibition, which can be seen until the end of September, is part of the curatorial axes Política del arte / Constelaciones fluididas (Art Politics / Fluid Constellations), in line with the exhibition Al Sur del Sur, which is on display in Malaga and Juntos Aparte, at the National Museum of Colombia in Bogota.
